This car is a Parnelli Jones Saleen Gt. It has a saleen 4.6 stroker (5.0) the car has under 20,000 miles on it and was making alot of noise so the owner brought it to us to diagnose and fix. It was making a noise we are quite familiar with hearing from stroker modulars, piston slap! This is not the first time we have dealt with this problem and one of the reasons we do not advocate a stroker in the modular world. However the owner wanted to keep the car original so we are going with a slight overbore to straighten the cylinders and reassembling with alot of attention to keeping the clearances perfect!

I’ve spent the last three days painting. All I have to say is, forget marathons! Paint prep and paint work is way more strenuous!

Ok, I lied. I have a lot more to say than that. Who is surprised? =)

Painting the largest room in my house with three small children in tow was quite challenging. It was certainly no small task. Everyone wanted to help but no one except me (which is debatable) was qualified. Once I began, being a painter seemed a glorious occupation to my girls and they all sought employment.

There was much work to do other than the actual application of color to the wall. Every last object in the living room had to be moved, covered, or masked. You know, the not so fun jobs associated with painting.

Rather reluctantly, my Mia single-handedly removed every last book from the gargantuan bookcase we use for school (save the books with bones and anatomy – she used to love them but now she fears for her life when she sees them.) Anyone who knows us knows how very many books that is! Both Mia nd Addie helped unmask and put thing back in order. Maylee helped tremendously simply by obeying me and not touching the wet paint. All in all, I’d say they were really good sports despite the three-day upheaval and intrusion upon their otherwise constant and stable world.

It sure wouldn’t have worked out so well if all three of them had decided to disregard my instructions and each just do their own thing. It wouldn’t have been pretty if Mia took on the role of paint commander-in-chief and made Addie and Maylee her finger painting subjects. You can imagine what a disaster this house might have been, then.

Well, it turns out Jesus’ disciples have a similar situation in Mark 9:33-37. Everyone wants to be the chief and no one wants to be an indian. I imagine the modern church can relate as well. Let’s see how the Lord deals with them.

33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” ~Mark 9;33-37

The disciples are arguing. If Jesus were Batman, they all wanted to be Robin. I’m sure if Jesus were painting, they’d all want to be paint commander-in-chief. They were fighting about who was better than who; who was superior to who; who was qualified to run the show with Jesus. It turns out that, just like my girls, none of them were. Even though they wer Jesus’ closest friends, they were yet extremely young and immature in their faith.

Notice that Jesus never accuses them. He never answers harshly or ridicules them for their immaturity. He knows they are but children. Instead, he asks a question that appeals to their consciences. He asks what the topic of their discussion was.

Jesus is not curious. He already knows their dialogue as well as their intentions. He is looking for some self-examination on their part. He wants them to recognize their own fault and confess their selfish pride in humility.

Unfortunately, these immature disciples seek not confession and repentance, but concealment of their sin. Not only are they ignorant of Jesus’ methods, expectations, and order (all of which involve humility and suffering servanthood), but they are also full of pride, willingly covering their sin when held accountable for it.

Jesus considers their silence an opportunity to teach them the truth. He corrects their false ideas and he makes clear what those who will be first will look like. They’ll look like those who are last…because they will be last. They’ll look like those who are humble…because they will be humble. They’ll look like those who are serving…because they will be serving. They’ll be like children – people of worldly non-importance, having little influence, and be quite helpless apart from their Daddy. They’ll be caring for those who have nothing to give in return. By acting in this way, they will prove that they know both Christ and the Father.

So many times I have set out to do that which looked glorious only to find that Jesus himself does the glory-work alone, and that my job is simply to move things around and put them in places where they don’t seem to make sense; to help my sisters stay out of trouble; to unmask the dirty garbage that sticks to the Lord’s already finished work; to simply obey My Master when he says, “Don’t touch!”

Lord, help me to be a humble servant rather than a prideful, immature disciple. Help me to remember that my job is to work hard, unmask, and obey fully. Help me not to turn your house into a disaster. You can do the painting. I’m not qualified for that glorious work anyway. I just want to be there to see your masterpiece at the end.
