10.74 @ 131
Still have the nasty drivetrain vibration though.....actually starts around 75 and gets worse as speed increases.
Wheels and brake drums removed - still vibrates
Whole new driveshaft - still vibrates
Take driveshaft out - clean
Leads me to believe it's something in the rear end.....
What do you think Tim?
Any troubleshooting tips?

Not to happy with my runs and still dont know why it was popping at 6000 rpm each gear on that one run. I also have a nasty rattle seems to be exhaust on passenger side I looked when I got home nothing lose and it only does it when driving not when in neutral. I first noticed it last week wasnt as bad but when you get on it its definatley there and on th way home even just cruisin you can hear it. Best time was 13.12@108.96. But i did beat a new 5.0.

Congrats to the both of you. As for the vibration Im thinking it in the tranny.
I ran a 17@54 and an 18@60. I let off both times at the 60ft, first run I fouled the plugs from being on the 2 step too long and the 2nd run i blew the tires off in 1st and 2nd and let off.

Bossman, what do you have done mod wise? Saw the car out there, it looks great.
I ran my best ever in my Monte Carlo yesterday- 13.08 @ 110. Car makes good power, just can't hook a FWD at all.

With no driveshaft, it's clean....no vibration at all....how could it be the trans?
Rossler Terminator T400 - Just put it in this year.....
I sincerely hope not....

Hotrod cams, kooks long tubes with3" h pipe c&l cai , 4:10 gears, hurst billet comp short throw and SCT X3 tuner. That was not my best time. First and second run spun way to bad to much rpm. Best time was 13.02 about a month ago.

Tom all you need is some tires so that car will really hook and leave. You make to much power for those tires

yep, I'm going to get some bigs and littles for next year (probably the brenspeed 15x10 ones).

Congrats to the both of you. As for the vibration Im thinking it in the tranny.
However....upon further inspection this morning, the trans tailshaft has a TON of play in it....I can probably wiggle it 1/4" or more.
Guess I'll be calling Carl in the morning.....

Is that Dan's best time? Is your car vibrating while just driving normal or when going down the track?
TheBigKoala
10-17-2010, 12:39 PM
Both but you hear it more driving around normal sure sounds like exhaust hitting something or lose I crawled under it last night everything seems tight i dont know if moving that motor over a little makes something hit or not it sure sounds like passenger side to me. going down the track is just loud

I don't think it's the bushing in the tailshaft....as loose as it feels, it would have to be the case bushing....which would mean the WHOLE thing has to come apart.....

Well, I took the tail shaft off and.....nothing wrong.....bushing looks new and not spun. Cleaned everything up and put it all back together....started the car (still on the stands) and gave it a quick spin....no vibration.
I'm confused....unless it is something that vibrates after it warms up???? I'll find out tomorrow....too late to make a bunch of noise....neighbors would have my head....lol

I think I may have figured it out....when I took the tail shaft off I had a bucket under it to catch the fluid....but none came out. I think that maybe the trans went a little bit low on fluid and the tailshaft was not getting any....the tail shaft bushing went dry and that was causing the vibrations. I will find out for sure tonight....
A Big thanks to Mike and Tim for pointing me in the right direction!!!

Hate to bust ur bubble, but i dont think thats it!how low on fulid was u? u would have to be five qts low to have the tailshaft not getting fulid, something else has to be wrong!

still, if you can wiggle the driveshaft up and down in the tailshaft, something is wrong.

With the drive out he can wiggle it,most tranny do that with out the shaft! How about ur flexplate? What motor do u have?

Ok here's the deal.....
First of all, the vibration was definitely coming from the trans tail shaft. When I re-assembled everything the vibration went away....since messing around in that area made a difference, this was absolutely the source.
Took out the driveshaft.....started dumping Trans fluid down the fill tube until it started peeing out of the tail shaft. It took almost two quarts to accomplish this. The dipstick now shows it to be way over filled. However, (I should have learned this from previous experience), when stuff is not factory, (universal T350/T400 dipsitck), the accuracy of it is questionable to say the least.
Put shaft back in and spun the heck out of it on the stands....clean, no trace of the vibration at all. Unfortunately it has been raining all evening so taking it out and running it up to 90mph is out of the question for tonight.
I will have to wait until tomorrow to actually run the car, but I'm pretty sure it's ok now.....

thats good, i had a similar problem before and i had the shaft balenced and it still vibrated a little until i got a strange yoke, then it quit. The strange yoke fit very tight, they told me to sand it down with sand paper until it slid in with just some resistance.

That's what I have on the new 'shaft.....a strange yoke....I supplied it to the driveshaft builder....
