Well, Mike made a good thread on the 6.4 power output on some dyno's and we started getting a lil off topic so i figured why not make a thread just about diesels, to talk about the new things, mods, opinions and just diesel trucks in general.. I love learning more about these trucks everyday and one day hoping to own one.. And please refrain from knocking on someones truck or making non constructive comments. So lets talk diesels!!!!!!!!:boxing:
Whats your fav diesel??

I love the look of the '04-'06 Fords, but i'm scared shitless to buy one without a warranty (my pricerange) with their engines. Its hard to find a crewcab with under 100k for under $23k, NO WARRANTY INCLUDED! Yikes. I want a Dodge because of the Cummins, but those used prices are ridiculous.

yea tell me about it... Those 6.0s tho have really two main problems, one is the EGR and can be fixed fairly cheap (EGR delete) and the second is the head studs/gasket, if you can work on a diesel this is a somewhat easy fix but if you cant then it will be an expensive one to get ARP head studs put in.. You usually can find a nice used one with those two mods.. The 6.0 is pretty much bulletproof once those two mods are done and with just a tuner you will be at around 400hp..
Dodge i would like to find an 07/08 last years of the 5.9 in a 6spd but i do not like dodge qualitty

Does Timmy do that kinda work? I can change 5.0 headgaskets, but that might be beyond my threshold.

Which quality are you talking about? My 01 only really has one interior flaw and thats that the $$$$ dash's crack.

Head gaskets in a ford are a nightmare. 99% pull the cab off to do head gaskets due to the design of the cab and motor placement.
They all have their weak links it boils down to what you want to do with it and how much your willing to spend to get there.
The 05-08's (Dodge) with the 5.9 Common rail is a huge powerhouse with lil work. Only limitation is knowing when to stop with it due to the computer using 3 injector cycles due to emissions. ONly way to eliminate the third one is a stand alone ecm, Which they are being made. They put out 700+hp with a 5.9 with no major mods. They did head studs and and gasket just to be safe. Not bad for a ecm upgrade.
Then of course they all have their tranny weakness's. The manual is a lil cheaper to mod as you can spend up to 5k on a fully built auto.
The Duramax is about the same as The cummins and ford. Be safe do head studs and go.
Just boils down to make a list of what you would like it to be able to do and what your willing to spend to make it reliable to do so. Though I will warn you when the diesel bug bites ya it bites hard lol.
I have alot of money tied up in my truck now and I'm about to dump another 4k into it lol.

Mike, i am talking about routine maintanence things like tie-rods, ball joints and things of that nature and im not saying there all like that, but most of the people that i know with dodge pick up trucks complain about alsways having to fix that stuff before they should really need it.. A guy at work with teh same body style cummins as you had to put ball joints in is truck twice in one year..
And 100% agree on head gasket change on a powerstroke.. ESPECIALLY the 6.4 you can even put your hand under the hood of that truck unless you lift the cab haha..
LIke i said in the other thread, i agree with mike. they all have their issues and they all excel at one aspect of the game. Just depends what your going to do with it.

Ya, ball joints are a pain in the $$$. Actually doing them isnt that hard though. Key thing is buy better then stock parts. They make upgraded ball joints now and make sure to get an aftermarket track bar as well. They even sell a steering box brace. Mine doesnt have the brace and the ball joints I put in a lil over 10k ago are still holding strong even running with 38's. Mine doesn't have the factory trac arm bar either though. Like we said its all in what you want to do and what you like best and are willing to deal with.

I am looking at 09 and newer F-250s, 5.9 6spd cummins, and all the older body style duramax's... Just what deal comes around.. Need something to haul a car trailer and car..

A buddy of mine owns a buisness with fleet trucks. (all factory stock)
They have an 01 3/4 ton dodge w/cummins and stick
They have a few powerstrokes(1 ton and 3/4 ton)
They just picked up a newer v10 ford 1 ton
They bought all the trucks brand new with the excepetion of the v10.
Speaking strictly functionally, the general consensus is the ford had the best truck (suspension, steering, and brakes) maintenance wise, the only thing they like about the dodge is that it gets 20mpg fully loaded with boxes/ladders, and the v10 actually has enough power even in fully loaded 1ton form....(they were pleasantly surprised)...however the fuel mileage leaves much to be desired.
They are happy with the reliability of the 7.3's and 6.0 so far......but they don't get cummins fuel mileage.
I will say that the 99 ford 1ton dump needed front shocks and ball joints at 100k miles....but for a work truck I suppose that's not too bad.

haha, just looking.. The worst part about it, is that a used TB SS and some of the used diesels are in the same price range.. Still havent found anything that i cant live without.. Its nice not having a truck/car payment. haha and im trying to focus on a summer vehicle right now since my truck is still running good and hoping run even better with a full tune up

Glow plugs mainly heat up the combustion chamber to get that first intialy fire going. After that it is simple preasure. They usualy only come on in the winter or colder months. If you replace them in a ford make sure to buy ford ones. They may cost a lil more but the cheaper ones from autozone/advance etc tend to mushroom at the end and when you go to replace one if its bad and its a big chunk that falls off, guess what your going to be doing next? Pulling the head. My dodge only has a grid heater that is in the intake system that heats up coils in the intake path to create warm air to help firing easier. Thats getting deleted on mine lol.
7.3 is a $$$$ good motor. Do the maitnence and it will last a good long time.

From what I understand the Allison is falling by the way side. Fords 6.4's are with a ford tranny. Seems there are more problems with the allison then even I thought. I know they put up with alot of abuse in the trucks at work. Granted no high horsepower stuff but, alot of dumbsh!ts driving them.

that truck is bada$$.. i am kinda curious how long that stock allison will hold up with that much power.. And it still has an IFS which i dont think belongs on a truck especially a Heavy duty truck

It is sad that all of them could be turned up from the factory, so they just use it as a sales ploy. Kinda like they did with the shelby 500 to 540. Either way gotta love the torque of a diesel.
This is a 12 valve cummins
