I dont want a Gm to Ford fight over this, just state what you would rather have and why.. So here is the question.. Which would you buy if you have the chance to get a 03/04 Cobra or a C5 Z06.. I am in the process of saving up and going to be buying one soon with cash, so the most i am spending will be 25k and that includes travel expenses if i have to go and get one a long distance away.. I was going with either a c6 or gt500 but since i will be needing a new dd this spring i have to cut back on my toy so i can afford a new dd.. The car will be a 60% street and 40% race.. So which would you rather have and why?

Ill give you my opinion, but first, why did you scrap your v6-5.4 dohc project if your going to just buy a new car?

that was going to be a 90% drag car and 10% street car.. It was being built to run in the NMRA and the NMCA and was going to be trailered everywhere and not driven on the street. It was not going to have power steering, no ac, no heat, one seat, 10pt cage, no radio, manual windows and locks, turbo was going to be too big to have fun with on the street it was going to have a 3 spd auto which also is not fun on the street.. It was just going to be basically a drag car that was legal to drive on the road and do a 30 mile cruise. Work would not allow me to travel to every race and there is no point to build something to just trailer to race at PRP and only go to 2 races or so.. So i decided i want something more streetable and have all those creature comforts and still be able to run low 11s to mid 10s..

And im also known not to keep things very long so re sale value is always in the back of my mind.. That 00 project i would of easily had 30k in and would of been only able to sell it for half that.. So i got smart and saw no point of building a 30k+ drag car for only a couple races a year..

That makes alot of sense. As for the above question, do you plan on modding these? Buying a close to stpck one and going to town or buying a nicely modded one and keeping it generally as is.

can't say what a corvette is worth off the top of my head, but if resale value is a key to your purchase, get the corvette IMO. cobra prices are dropping fast & you'd be lucky to come close to breaking even when selling. while corvettes aren't known for their prices climbing they stay pretty steady making a break even much more likely.

I will probably mod down the road but for the time being i am open to all.. As i found a KB cobra for 25k and also have found a 02 Z06 with aps tt kit for 25k.. So im open to all.. Stock would be fine also, but are usually more expensive than a bolt-on to modded one..

thats my first thoughts, but they are holding there value quite well.. I have seen a few tt cobras still going for 30k and stock ones close to that..

03 cobra!!!! I love those cars so much, interior is awesome, looks great, quick!
I think to well be a sought after car forever too, you should never have a problem getting rid of it

The z06 isn't as friendly as a street car as the cobra.

If I was going to go all out and modify it anyway, I would do a z51 c5, they are more aerodynamic, and if you are replacing everything anyway, it will end up being the same as the z06 but cheaper. The z51 c5 also has a lot more creature comforts then a zo6 (hud, insulation, way nicer seats, and some more things that I cant remember). You could also find a lower mile z51 for 25k compared to z06.

As far as end price w/mods, the cobra will end up being a lot cheaper. Vette parts cost a fortune.

I don't know if it helps but I always use Roberts stuff to keep an eye on cobra prices http://www.hi-endauto.com/inventory.html they seem to be dropping quick to me anyways

Why you say the z06 isnt as street friendly?

I really dont like the way the z51 looks and there is alot that i wouldnt change on the z06 that i would have to change on the z51 to even keep up with the z06 including on a road coarse.. I am very partial to the way the z06 and the frc looks in the c5.. C6 is a different story with the comparsion but i am phasing those out of my mind..

Vette engine parts are not any more expensive than a camaro/firebird (engine) such as heads, cams, intakes.. I admit the exhaust is more, but the LS6 comes with a stout 405 straight out of the box.. The ls6 heads and intake can easily be ported with a nice lumpy can to put out great numbers..
As far as parts cost to keep them together.. I know a z06 with just full exhaust and 315/35/17 in drs did 12.0 and a pulley/tune/exhaust/sticky tire car will more than likely run the same, so in the end you spent basically the same amount to get the same time..

Im just trying to focus on both sides and thanks for all the opinons and thoughts so far guys, keep them coming..

The z06 is the better option if you are going road racing, I didn't see that in your original post. I was just referring to if you are doing heads and cams, you can do the same thing to the ls1 as the ls6. The z06 will kill the Cobra and z51 at road racing.

The c5 (you can get a z51 FRC too) has a lot of little things that the c5z doesn't have because the z06 is more of a factory race car. If you are really interested you can look it up, its been awhile since I sold mine. The main reason I went with the z51 coupe was because I liked the glass removable roof. If you plan on driving across the country, the c5 z51 would win the comfort factor.

Anything Corvette specific will have a pretty decent mark up. Price of parts would go to the Mustang. It would be cheaper to make the Cobra faster at the Drag strip.

I'm just trying to share my opinion because I had a c5 before I got the Mustang. Also, part of my reasoning that your spending 25k, I started having a lot of small issues with my Vette from actually driving it, most people just leave them in the garage. You would get a lot lower miles and better year (2004) z51 then a 25k z06.

in honestly the z06 will probably just get a cam and port heads and intake until the small bore l92s are perfected as they already have some being made and into testing. and if that happens a bigger cam with l92s and a fast intake will find its way onto it with a nice 150 shot of spray which will easily be a mid 10 sec car. and still get good gas MPG..

the cobra will need a upgrade blower (5k option) with all the fuel system and everythign else needed so if you take that into consideration it will be less into the z06 than the cobra..

do you want a muscle car or a sports car ? There is a big difference!

I love cobras and if it were up to me I would buy one no doubt, but IMO the z06 is just a better car all around......call me crazy....I just prefer the cobra cause its so raw, nothing like it. The vette is a more refined sports car tho.

I completely agree. If you want a sports car, z06 for sure. If you want a muscle car, get a cobra. I straight up love the blower whine of a cobra, but the body lines of a stock z06 are amazing. If I were getting one, i'd probably get a nicely modded cobra(ported eaton or KB/Whipple, full exhaust, other basics) because nothings sounds better than a screaming terminator flying down the road.

TB ss , Cobra, Z06, lol sounds like you got a money problem. You got to much of it!!!!! lol......wish i had that problem. Anyway im a huge vette and cobra fan, its kind of a coin toss in my opinion. I guess i would go with whereever i found the best deal ,( if money was a concern). You will learn to love what u buy because it is yours... even if it isnt what exactly what you wanted.

have to say the cobra too.. i mean IMO a corvette is a rich man's sports car. and the mustang is the average working mans muscle car. and i hate gm sooooo that gives some bias. and dont forget that on these kinda roads around here wherever you take a corvette you will scrape and destroy the underneath. just my thinking though and if you wanna resell it a beat up, scraped up corvette wont be as much. but thats just me man, hope this helps

True, But im pretty dead set on this. I sacraficed 2 years without a car and its time for me to get back into one and i had a project but school loans got into the way of that and it let me time to think that a straight up drag car is not what i want...

I have been looking at more and more cars and have come to the conclusion that a 03/04 Cobra will be my next purchase due to the good points brought up by you guys and the fact that they are cheaper compared to the z06 and the fact that if i had a cage or throw a KB on it that it will not hurt resale as much as it would in a z06.. And I will already have a lsx vehicle in the stable so i might as well even it out..

Thanks for all the opinions guys and not turning it into a Ford vs GM arguement:hippie:

no I am focusing on getting a TB SS right now for the dd duties, but i am now on the lookout out for one but i am very and i mean very picky on this car this time.. Only real ones i am looking at are

04 MystiChrome Cobra
04 DSG
03 TR vert
03/04 Black
03/04 Silver

In that order.. They must have atleast a ported eaton with all supporting mods.. "prevention" mods also needed.. Miles that are reasonably low. No winters, southern car and one that needs nothing.. I can unload off trailer and drive it to the track and drive it home..
